Another Tight Budget Year Ahead For Sacramento State

About midway into Gonzalez’s annual fall address…something unexpected happened. A false alarm went off inside the auditorium. Something Gonzalez jokingly wondered about…given his bleak message about the budget.

“Now if I was paranoid, I’d think somebody planned that” (audience laughter).

Earlier this year, the university laid off eight employees as part of an effort to balance the school’s 26-Million dollar budget deficit…and that’s not all…

“The deep budget cuts of the past two-years have been a nightmare and they’ve forced us to make difficult decisions including enrollment cuts, furloughs and campus-level impaction.”

Impaction is when student demand exceeds state funding. Sac State will have to turn away about 25-hundred students next year. But Gonzalez says there’s a lot to celebrate...new academic programs, more students living on campus and the opening of a new 70-Million dollar fitness center.

Still, Gonzalez admits it’s a tough time for the campus right now...and urged employees to stay positive.

“Living with reduced budgets is very, very difficult. Especially when we’re all being bombarded by negatives from the media, from the Legislature. Don’t get fatigued.”

Friday is move-in day on the Sac State campus. Classes begin on Monday.
