"Basically it means that nearly all inmate movement is restricted. So there's no programming, there's no yard. All of those things are temporarily suspended."

Terry Thornton is with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She told Capital Public Radio's INSIGHT Wednesday that investigators are looking at surveillance video and interviewing witnesses to find out what started the riot.

"I can tell you preliminary that this started with just an altercation between two inmates and then other inmates joined in and used this apparently as an opportunity to just fight and wreak havoc."

Two inmates remain hospitalized…but Thornton says the five inmates who were shot in the fight have all been released.

The inmates were shot by prison guards during a riot Friday night involving 200-inmates at the medium-security prison's main exercise yard.
