Locomotive officials are usually touting the wonders of rail travel.

But at a news conference outside the Sacramento Railroad Museum the talk was of the dangers trains can pose.

Martin Tuttle is Deputy Director for CalTrans. He says more trains are coming to California, and while that may be good news for travelers …

"They also pose a safety problem for people who try to compete with trains while at grade crossings or like Shawn Potter did in terms of trying to play chicken with the train. We have to respect that these have enormous power and speed and they don't stop on a dime."

According to officials, 86 Californians died on the tracks last year. Forty-one people have been killed by trains so far this year.
