Sparks City Council members have approved a trial program in three neighborhoods called the Streetlight Reduction Demonstration Project.

"What we will begin to do is shutoff some streetlights with the exception of those that are located at intersections or roadway curves or even cul-de-sacs."

Adam Mayberry with the city says Sparks spent more than $850,000 last year to operate and maintain almost 5,000 streetlights. He says cutting back on those expenses could help save jobs.

"We've had to reduce our workforce and our budget by more than 25% over the last two years. We're at the point where we really have to begin to only provide those necessary services that our citizens require."

Mayberry says Santa Rosa and other cities around the country have reduced streetlights to save energy and money.

He says if the trial program is successful, it could go citywide.
