It's been one year since Sacramento County created a task force to oversee In-Home Supportive Services or IHSS.

"What we have learned this year is that there are many opportunities for fraud in this program."

Laura West is a Deputy District Attorney who heads up the task force.

She told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday that fraud can range from identity theft to exaggerating claims. West says in the past year, the task force has received more than 1,300 reports of suspected fraud.

"On 588 of those fraud referrals the money should not have left, it did and that was to the tune of over $2 million."

She says the state IHSS program was designed to be easily accessible for people who truly need services.

"But the flipside of that unfortunately is those same things that were created perhaps for ease are easily exploited by those that want to steal from the program."

West says the county task force will now work with state officials to help shore up flaws in the IHSS program.
