UNR Wins Grant For Quake Lab

The grant from the U.S. Commerce Department will make the University of Nevada, Reno's earthquake simulation facility the largest in the country.  

"The beauty of this facility here is that you can build very large scale sometimes full scale structures."

Manos Maragakis is the University's dean of engineering.  He says the bigger the model, the better the results. 

"The sample that we are going to be testing is very large scale so the observed results are much easier to process and to believe them because the effect of scaling is less."

The expanded laboratory will be nearly double the size of the current facility and will house five large-capacity shake tables.  Those will allow for seismic testing on much bigger models of buildings and bridges than have ever been tested before.
