Amgen Tour Skips Davis, Nevada City

Davis has been one of the Amgen Tour's 15 host cities for the past four years.

"Davis of course is disappointed that we're not involved in this year's race."

Mayor Don Saylor says the nationally televised Tour de France style road race has brought a lot of attention to Davis. It's also brought a lot of spectator business to local shops and restaurants. Saylor says he's hopeful the race will eventually return to Davis.

"We don't see this as any kind of an indication that the tour was unhappy with Davis as a location, just that they have a need to continue to increase the visibility of the tour by visiting other locations."

Another stop that won't be on next year's route is Nevada City, although North and South Lake Tahoe and Auburn will be…for the first time.

Dan Tebbs: "This is probably the biggest thing that has ever happened to Auburn in my opinion, besides maybe the Gold Rush."

Dan Tebbs owns the Victory Velo bike shop in Auburn. He sat on a committee that lobbied AEG Sports on behalf of Auburn. AEG puts on the Amgen tour. President Andrew Messick says it's tough to pick only 15 cities.

"For Nevada City and Davis it's a challenge. We can't go back to the same cities every year. We want to give new cities, cities like Auburn, a chance to be a part of our race."

The 800 mile tour will start in South Lake Tahoe on May 15th and end in Thousand Oaks on May 22nd. SOC
