The jobless rate historically dips a little in September but not this year. September's unemployment rate was 12.5%, up from the August rate of 12.4%.

"It went the opposite direction of what it usually does. But since it's only 0.1% it really wasn't much movement."

Alex Alvarado is with the state Employment Development Department. He says seasonal declines in leisure and hospitality lead month-over-month job loss.

"When people start going back to school and work as the summer ends, those sectors tend to suffer."

Other sectors that suffered include construction which lost 700 jobs and government which lost 600.

The Sacramento area hit its highest unemployment rate earlier this year at 13.1% in both January and March.
