The Democrat says he's looking forward to getting to work and wants to focus on what's right with California, including the state's natural resources and higher education.

"If you're from another state you'd love to have the problems of California. Do not count California out, do not make excuses that our best days are behind us, our best days are ahead of us I'm absolutely confident of that."

Newsom defeated Republican incumbent Abel Maldonado, who was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger about six months ago. Newsom's win means San Francisco will have an interim mayor appointed by the city's board of supervisors until an election next year.
