Property Tax Payments Due Friday

County tax collectors say there's no wiggle room when it comes to paying your tax bill on time.

"We really stick to the postmarked date. You can say, 'well, I put in the office mail slot or it was metered in my office on the 10th,' that isn't going to do it."

Guy Fuson with Sacramento County's Department of Finance says if you can't get your payment postmarked by 5 PM Friday, you can pay online or in person.

Fuson says plummeting home values have put a dent in property tax revenues…money that's used to pay for sheriffs services, street improvements and parks.

"The amount of revenue we're getting is based on those property values, so yes, our General Fund revenues will be down this year again."

The penalty for a late payment is 10-percent of your tax bill.
