The Placer County District Attorney is trying to block the release of a fire incident report…saying it would make it harder to find impartial jurors.

But several media organizations…including The Sacramento Bee…say the public has a right to know more about the shopping mall fire.

Reporter Ed Fletcher is covering the story for The Bee. He appeared on Capital Public Radio's Insight yesterday:

"The fire had almost died down and then minutes later you see big black plumes of smoke coming out of the building. And later we found out that the sprinklers were shut off. But this is a very unusual case and maybe they have a compelling reason to shut the sprinklers off. But we haven't heard that yet and they haven't really explained their actions."

The October 21st fire caused millions of dollars in damage at the shopping mall. Suspect Alexander Piggee is facing five felony charges.

A ruling on the gag order is expected later this week.
