The CHP is gearing up for its "Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period."

"What that means is every available officer will be out patrolling this holiday weekend. We want to make sure that the motorists arrive to their destination safely."

CHP Officer Adrian Quintero says state budget cuts won't affect the number of officers out-on-patrol.

"We've been very fortunate as far as staffing levels. We're still at the same levels we were back in the '70s."

Last year, 22 people were killed in crashes during the holiday season. Quintero says officers will be on the lookout for drunk drivers, people going too fast and drivers using cell phones.

"…distracted driving in general. Not just cell phone use but messing with the radio, mp3 players, eating. Driving while distracted is obviously an issue for us."

The Maximum Enforcement Period begins Friday at 6 PM and continues through Sunday at midnight. Another enforcement period will be in effect next weekend for New Year's.
