Deadline for Arena Proposals is Here (Again...)

UPDATE - THURSDAY AFTERNOON:

Two of the plans are for the Railyards property just north of downtown Sacramento.  A third group wants to build it at the Westfield Downtown Plaza on the K Street Mall.  And the fourth wants to keep the arena in Natomas, next door to the current Arco Arena.

Three of the four groups have modified and updated their proposals from last year - including developer Gerry Kamilos.  His complex land swap won the right to negotiate with the city, but later stalled.

The fourth proposal comes from developer David Taylor, who worked with Kamilos on the land swap … but has since formed his own group.

The task force will hold a public hearing next Thursday … then submit a recommendation to the city council later in the month.

ORIGINAL STORY

Nearly one year ago to the day, Johnson's Arena Task Force collected seven proposals.  A few months later, the panel picked one of them - a complex land swap led by developer Gerry Kamilos.  That proposal stalled, after failing to meet several benchmarks set by the city.  Now, Kamilos is back with a new proposal, as are groups led by McClellan Park President Larry Kelley and Kamilos's former land swap partner, developer David Taylor.  Mayor Johnson says all three groups have potential, but they - and any others that submit a proposal - will have to make their case.

Johnson: "Now it's about financing.  It's about does a team have the leadership and capacity to be able to pull it off.  And that's what the $100, or the $100,000 question, or the $100 million dollar, whatever number you want to use, question is."

The mayor's task force will hold a public hearing next week and make a recommendation to the city council a couple of weeks after that.
