Transition of Power: Schwarzenegger Sparked Sacramento Tourism

Just about every gift store in town sold some kind of Arnold Schwarzenegger-related item when the governor was first elected.

"Governator bobbleheads, governator hats, shirts, mugs, shot glasses. We sold a good amount of it in Old Sacramento."

Troy Carlson is with Stage Nine Entertainment Store. He says those items were especially popular among tourists who were visiting from around the world.

"We've even had people ask questions like 'do you think we can see him if we go to the capitol?' People think he's maybe just walking around the halls."

Tourism also saw a boost in business. Mike Testa with the Sacramento Convention and Visitor's Bureau says a lot more organizations held their conferences here.

"Whether it was a stamp collecting group or a huge national convention, everybody wanted Schwarzenegger to come address their group."

Testa says although Governor-elect Jerry Brown is well known around the world, he's not expected to attract as many tourists…or sell as many bobblehead dolls…as Schwarzenegger.
