US Postal Service Says Downtown Office Inadequate

Buying stamps and dropping off packages at the Downtown Sacramento Post Office got more complicated after the September 11th Terror Attacks.

"I've received a lot of complaints over the years."

Ralph Petty is the Customer Relations Coordinator for the Sacramento Post Office. He says after 9-11, the federal government added security in the building by installing metal detectors and reducing business hours.  

"We have to close everyday at 5 o'clock and we're not allowed to be open on the weekends and this just created some inconveniences for customers especially those that work during the day and have a rough time getting to the Post Office."

As a result, Petty says business has dropped off. He also says the current site is too small. The Postal Service is proposing to expand the current facility. If that's not possible other options include moving to another site or constructing a new building.

A public hearing on the issue will be held at tonight's Sacramento City Council meeting.
