Governor Jerry Brown's plan to cut $500 million from the California State University system may be the hot topic among staff and faculty at Sacramento State. But University President Alexander Gonzalez says no one knows the particulars yet.

"It's too soon to determine how the state budget will affect our campus specifically. I'm already being asked 'how many dollars will that mean?"

Gonzalez delivered his annual Spring Address today. He says the campus is in relatively good shape to weather the next round of state cuts thanks to prudent budgeting over the past few years.

But Gonzalez says - with the state facing a $25 billion budget deficit, all options are open.  

"It pains me to say that the CSU cannot rule out furloughs and enrollment reductions and more deep cuts."

Health Science Professor Louis Boulgarides was one of the faculty members in the audience. She's also Vice President of the Sac State chapter of the California Faculty Association.

Boulgarides says the good news is - nothing is final yet.

"We still have a lot of time to work toward educating the public and the governor about the importance of public higher education. So that's what we're going to be working on this next few months." 

Meanwhile, Sacramento State's spring semester starts on Monday.
