Explorit has seen a 14% decline in financial contributions over the past year. Executive Director Lou Ziskind says the museum can't keep up with the $1.6 million mortgage on its Second Street building.

ZISKIND: "We're going to sell the facility. The economy just has made it unaffordable."

The Second Street site will close at the end of the month…leaving three employees out-of-work.

Explorit will continue to feature exhibits at its original site on Fifth Street...which opened nearly 30-years ago. The museum will also continue its mobile program for schools.

ZISKIND: "Everybody is very, very committed to making Explorit work and move forward into the future."

Ziskind says the museum is gearing up for its next exhibit on the science of sports. He says the staff is also planning a fund drive for the spring.

The museum serves about 65,000 people every year.
