Brown's budget would increase community college fees from
twenty six dollars to thirty six dollars per unit, starting in
July. The non-partisan legislative analyst approves of the idea -
and in fact, even suggests going as high as forty dollars a
unit. In his report, Analyst Mac Taylor says a fee increase
would leverage more federal funds and wouldn't hurt the neediest
students, because their fees are waived. Brown has
proposed a 400 million dollar cut to community colleges.
Taylor points out the fee increase would help mitigate that
by bringing in 110 million dollars a year. Taylor says even
at 36 dollars a unit, the fees would still be the lowest in the
country.
