Group Moves Forward With African American Charter Schools

Fortune School of Education got the green light from the Sacramento County Office of Education Wednesday to open a chain of charters.

But critics say the schools will siphon away students from the Sacramento City Unified School District…which will result in less state funding.

Gustavo Arroyo is president of the district's Board of Directors.

"It could lose easily anywhere between $5-10 million. Rather than have a competition, I would rather have more of cooperation with the proponents of the charter to really get to the bottom of how we really work to address the achievement gap in Sacramento."

Former Schwarzenegger Administration advisor Margaret Fortune heads the charter school group.

She says the current education system is dramatically under-serving African American students.
