A new state law says kids who don't get the shot won't be allowed to attend middle or high school during the 2011-2012 school year.
Elizabeth Graswich is with the Elk Grove Unified School District…which is holding a free booster shot clinic today.
"For Elk Grove Unified this is a big deal. We have about 29,000 students who will be entering 7th through 12th grade next year. That's a lot of students to get proof of this pertussis shot. So we're asking families to get the shot now."
Graswich says families can avoid the back-to-school rush over the summer by getting the shots as early as possible.
Today's free clinic will be from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Sheldon High School cafeteria.
The new state law requiring adolescent pertussis…or T-dap…shots was enacted following a whooping cough epidemic last year.
