Homewood Expansion Plans Worry Conservationists

Homewood Mountain Ski Resort has been around for 50 years.

"Unfortunately, I think the times have caught up with it."

Art Chapman is president of JMA Ventures…the San Francisco-based real estate firm that owns Homewood. Chapman wants to revamp the site and create an upscale boutique ski resort. Among other features, it would include a 75-room hotel, around 100 multi-family condos and retail space.

And that worries Rochelle Nason. She's executive director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

"The west shore is currently one of the quieter portions of the Tahoe basin. And the notion here is to create a much denser urban experience. So that's a big concern for us."

Traffic congestion is another concern says Nason.

But Chapman says their plan to create more lodging means they could accommodate overnight guests and that would reduce traffic in the winter time.

"Because by reducing the number of ticket sales on weekends we cut down on the commuter traffic and by capturing people for three or four days mid-week we get them out of the car."

JMA Ventures will present a draft environmental impact statement on the project Wednesday at a meeting of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board.
