The foothills are preparing for snow.
Kevin Taber is the engineering manager for Placer County Road
Maintenance. He says snow in low elevations presents a
unique challenge for road crews because it usually rains before it
snows.
"When it rains and then goes to freezing," Traber
said. "You get that layer of ice maybe underneath the
snow. And that's what a lot of people aren't really prepared
for is that ice skating rink almost
literally."
Taber says snow plows and sand trucks will be stretched to the
limit over the next couple days. They'll be plowing roads from
Auburn to the Stateline
But low snow brings business for people like Steve
Riccardelli. He owns the Confluence Kitchen and Market in
downtown Auburn. He says stranded motorists often end up in
his restaurant.
"All the sudden there are way more than the usual number
of people roaming around Auburn looking for something to eat,"
Riccardelli said.
The wet weather is expected to dry up by Saturday
afternoon.
