UC Davis Plans to Lay Off 450-500 Employees

UC President Mark Yudof says the 10-school system is facing a one billion dollar budget shortfall this year.

"We may be forced to lay off employees, turn away new students, reduce academic programs, suspend building projects, and take other measures," Yudof said.

UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi has announced plans to do all of what Yudof warned about in order to close the campus' share of the billion dollar budget shortfall, which she calculates to be around 100 million dollars.

"We will have to make cuts in order to make investments.  And that's the difficulty we're going to find ourselves in.  Because this is not something we've experienced so many times in the past," Katehi said.

Besides laying off nearly 500 employees, Katehi says the school is planning on accepting more non-resident students, which will make it more difficult for local students to get into Davis.
And these plans are a best-case-scenario.  They assume the governor's proposed tax extensions make it on the ballot this summer, and get passed by the voters.
