The Sacramento City Council last night voted five-to-four to decide later this month whether to revoke the fee. The program charges fees to out-of-town drivers involved in accidents requiring a fire department response.

Councilman Jay Schenirer originally voted for the fee…but last night said he now has second thoughts.

"I don't think this is the right policy for us. I wasn't crazy about the policy coming into the game. But the money and the hole we were in pushed me to vote the way I did."

The cost-recovery program would've generated an estimated $500,000 a year. And Councilwoman Angelique Ashby who voted against repealing the program said the city needs that money.

"I'm a little sensitive on the issue of brownouts and how we're going to pay for these fire stations and a $40 million budget gap. I just don't think it's wise to take any funding stream off the table."

The backlash against Sacramento's vote earlier this year to adopt the program has been particularly harsh - including calls to boycott city businesses. 

A final vote on whether to repeal the cost-recovery program could come before the end of the month.
