Rosanna Herber is the chair of the newly formed lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender redistricting committee.  She says Sacramento's L-G-B-T community is mostly concentrated in downtown and midtown, an area currently split into three districts.

"We want to unite the L-G-B-T voice and have one district represent the downtown and the midtown area," Herber said.

Herber says a split vote is weak. Like many other groups she wants the city's redistricting committee to recognize it as a "community of interest" when it draws new districts this fall.

Scot Mende is with the city.

"To the extent you can draw a community of interest in one district, it gives that community of interest greater influence over selection over candidates," Mende said.

Herber says the first step to getting an L-G-B-T city councilmember is consolidating the community's vote into one district.
