Superintendents Urge Tax Extension Vote in June, Not November

If Democrats can't seal a budget deal with a few Republican votes, they'll face a tough choice on how to put the governor's proposed tax extensions before voters: either go around GOP lawmakers with a legally-questionable majority vote or gather signatures for a November ballot initiative.

Hanson: "Frankly, November does us very little good."

Fresno Unified School District Superintendent Mike Hanson says school districts need the potential revenues - and they need them by the end of June.  Or else …

Hanson: "We will spend the 11-12 school year decimating, devastating and tearing down programs for students across this entire state."

And even if a November initiative did pass…

Hanson: "We would then spend the 12-13 year trying to rebuild what we have just torn down."

The superintendents declined to say what they think should be in a budget deal.
