The River City Food Bank is launching it's "Giving Fresh" program this Wednesday.
"It's kind of like a canned food drive without the cans. It's a fresh food drive."
Eileen Thomas is the executive director of the food
bank. She says the food bank will have a booth set up at the
farmers market in Cesar Chavez Plaza, where people can donate fresh
fruits and vegetables.
"We'll be able to weigh in the produce, give you a
receipt, and our goal is through the summer to be able to get
people to donate more than 50,000 pounds of fresh fruits and
vegetables to go to families in need throughout
Sacramento."
Thomas says fresh fruits and vegetables are among the food
bank's greatest needs.
For the time being, the "Giving Fresh" program is offered only
at the farmers market at Cesar Chavez Plaza, which is held on
Wednesdays from 10 to two. Thomas says she hopes to expand
the program to other farmers markets in the
future.
