New figures from the Los Rios Community College District show that fewer students are transferring to either California State University or University of California campuses.
"We're very concerned that transfer students may not have a place to go in-state."
Susie Williams with the Los Rios district says state budget cuts at California's public universities have made it harder for transfer students to afford tuition and get the classes they need.
She says last year Los Rios transferred 3,213 students to out-of-state or private universities compared to 2,222 students who transferred to UC or CSU campuses.
Williams says Los Rios students are choosing universities such as Harvard and MIT.
"They're going to get a good education. But they may get part-time jobs there that lead to full-time jobs and California may lose that brainpower."
The Los Rios District consists of American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake and Sacramento City colleges.
