The U.S. Forest Service has between 1,300 and 1,500 firefighters in Arizona. Cal Fire has 700 fewer firefighters compared to last year because of budget cuts.
Joseph Millar with the Forest Service says they are watching the grasses dry out and are prepared to pull their crews out of the southwest. But in the meantime, they will stay and help our neighbors.
MILLAR: "In 2006, 2007, and 2008, we've had some very active fire seasons, and those folks around the nation have come to support us. And so, right now, It's our opportunities. for the federal agencies to be reaching out in support."
Millar says they are prepared to help Cal Fire if needed. Cal Fire is running three-man engines this year as opposed to the four-man engines of a year ago.
