Assembly Committee Says BB Gun Bill Misses Mark

Anyone want a bright pink BB gun?  How 'bout bright green, orange or red?  That's what you'd find at your local toy store if SB 798 becomes law.  It's authored by Democratic Senator Kevin DeLeon.  He says the current designs are so real, police officers often can't tell the difference:

DeLeon: "They have to make a split-nanosecond decision: is that a real gun or is that a BB gun?  And we've had too many instances where kids have been killed."

But opponents say the misperception question actually cuts the other way.  Tom Pedersen is with the California Rifle and Pistol Association:

Pedersen: "BB guns are not toys.  We don't really want individuals to think that they're toys."

…because, he says, they're dangerous if used incorrectly.  The bill passed the Senate earlier this year, but now it's stuck in the Assembly Public Safety Committee.  It's up for reconsideration next week.
