Taxes To Drop Friday

With the start of the new fiscal year, the state sales tax drops one percent and the vehicle license fee a half a percent.  Those were temporary increases passed in 2009.  Governor Jerry Brown wanted to ask voters to extend them, but he couldn't convince Republicans. Assembly GOP Leader Connie Conway is taking full credit:

Conway: This is much-needed relief and it's the result of Assembly Republicans standing together to represent the only interest group we represent and that's the hard-working taxpayers."

But Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg says there's another cost:

Steinberg: "The price that will be paid by those trying to get into the university, trying to get into the community colleges - to our law enforcement agencies, to our courts, across the board, is going to be very real."

Democrats are now considering going to the voters in 2012 to ask for new revenue.
