Lawmakers are prepping for what's likely to be a fast-paced final month of session this year.  Democratic Senator Mark Leno says it'll be all about the bills:

Leno:"Well, we get to replace our legislative caps on our heads.  It will be policy-driven, focused and we of course, love our legislation."

And that includes legislation of all kinds.  For Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg:

Steinberg:"The top of my list is public education."

He's hoping to work on a measure that shifts accountability from test scores to college and career readiness. While Democratic Senator Gloria Negrete-McLeod wants to work on some unfinished business:

Negrete-McLeod: "Pension reform is being one - we still have to work on redevelopment - how do we work on that.  So there's still a lot of things that Just because we did the budget is one thing, but there's still things that we have to do here."

But Republican Senator Tony Strickland says the budget is also unfinished business:

Strickland: "We're going to have plenty of clean-up legislation because this budget wasn't well-thought out and it has rosy projections and if we don't fix the budget problem through job creation we're going to be revisiting this like that old movie called groundhog day."

Fellow GOP Senator Doug La Malfa says beyond legislation, there's one other thing that will be on nearly every lawmaker's mind:  the new political district maps being drawn by a citizen's commission:

LaMalfa: "That'll be a big focus of course for legislators to watch and then we'll see what the musical chairs are going to be after that for people that are displaced from their district or wanting to run for something higher or this and that so it'll be actually a pretty busy month I'm sure."

Legislators return August 15th and will work through September 9th, then adjourn for the year.
