County Fairs Looking for Funding

One fair opened this weekend that may serve as a model for others struggling to survive.

The Yuba Sutter Fair is not one of the 29 fairs the state fears might close next year.  Yuba Sutter Fair Director Regina Goody says, even before the 32 million dollar funding cut, they had been bracing for bad news for awhile.

GOODY:  "In the past our allocation came from horse racing.  We got a percentage of horse racing fees. A couple of years ago, when horse racing in California started to go down, they threw us in with the general fund.  Really, California Fairs knew two years ago when that happened that we would be the first thing cut if their were a budget problem."

Goody says they have already trimmed expenses to make up for the 150 thousand dollar shortfall. They also fund the fair with the proceeds from 250 events at the fairgrounds each year.  Sacramento and Placer county are at risk of losing their fairs next year.  Fairs believed to be at high risk rely on the state for at least 20 percent of their funding.
