The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis is only 10 years old. But the building has always been plagued with waterproofing problems.

University officials say on stormy days, wind pushes rainwater in between sandstone tiles along the building's south wall.

To fix the problem workers will remove all 50,000 tiles and replace the building's waterproof membrane.

Since the tiles will have to be broken off, new tiles have been ordered from the same quarry in India that supplied the originals.

The Mondavi Center's general contractor McCarthy Building is doing the job. University officials say they can't release a dollar figure for the work because of a confidentiality clause.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, events at the Mondavi Center will go on as scheduled during the repair work.
