Explosion Feared In Lincoln Railcar Fire

Daniel Berlant with CalFire says firefighters worked throughout the night spraying water on the 29,000 gallon tanker:

"The fear though is that as that propane continues to be on fire that the top of that tank continues to weaken structurally. Any type of weakness to that tank could cause an explosion and that's what we don't want to see. We are allowing the fire at the top to continue to burn because it's burning that off gassing from that propane as it escapes."

The possibility of an explosion has led to the evacuation of thousands of homes in the area.

Fire officials say an explosion could cause a fireball that would consume blocks blocks and hurl large pieces of metal up to a half mile away.

The fire began yesterday at a Northern Propane Energy yard. The American Red Cross has set up three evacuation centers.

FROM THE CITY OF LINCOLN'S WEBSITE:

Areas currently being evacuated include NE of Highway 65 & Ferrari Ranch road all the way to the northern City limit.

Residents west of Highway 65 are being evacuated to either the Lincoln Community Center at 1st & Joiner, or Club Lincoln within Lincoln Crossing at 830 Groveland Lane. Residents east of Highway 65 are being evacuated to Kilaga Springs Lodge at 1176 Sun City Boulevard.
