Federal flood plain maps are being computerized and are supposed to be getting more accurate as a result. Diane Margetts is with the Sacramento County Department of Water Resources. She says some of the people receiving letters will no longer classified as living in a flood plain, but most will.
MARGETTS: "Likely people living near creeks, rivers, it's probably not going to be a complete surprised. But, for folks being moved in there, it's really important to check with their insurance provider to see if they need flood insurance coverage. If they have a federally backed mortgage, likely they will."
A thousand people living in unincorporated areas should be officially reclassified in May. A thousand people in the Delta will also be affected.
