Fight For the Med Center Not Over

Time is running out for any changes to be made to the redistricting map already approved once by the council. The Council will make its final decision on the new district boundaries September 6th.

Michael Boyd is president of the neighborhood association.  He says the Oak Park area can't afford to lose an asset like the Med Center, and it shouldn't have to.

Boyd: " It's a clear and simple power grab by one city councilmember from another's district of an asset that has no relationship to members of a population.  So, really no relationship to apportionment or to redistricting and that just seems highly unfair to us."

Councilmember Kevin McCarty would represent the Med Center. He says the citizens redistricting commission favored this particular idea.

McCarty:14 "The hospital historically had been in District 5 but District 6 is growing to the west because of demographics and population growth.  District 6 neighborhoods now circle the entire hospital. It just made sense. I think the citizen commission had it right."

The Oak Park Neighborhood Association is planning a rally Thursday.  Organizers plan to walk from 34th Street to the Med Center.
