The California state legislature has passed a bill that would
prohibit anyone under 18 from using tanning beds. Current law
requires parental consent for minors over 14, and already bans use
for children.
Science makes the link between ultraviolent radiation exposure and skin cancer.
The bill's author Senator Ted Lieu calls tanning beds "deadly."
LEIU: We're trying to get California to follow the lead of other countries, and set the example by banning tanning beds for anyone under 18.
Leiu says European counties have already enacted such a ban.
Sources say a dozen other states considered similar legislation this year.
But the bills are still alive in only a handful of states, including New York and Rhode Island.
Governor Brown has until October 9th to consider the bill.
