Davis Considers Higher Water Rates

Under the proposal, monthly rates for single-family residential users would go from $35 to $77. But the increase would take place gradually over a five-year period.

The extra revenue will help Davis city officials pay for a new water system.

Right now, Davis depends on well water which is laced with minerals. The city wants to get its water instead from the Sacramento River. The project will cost $325 million to build new pipelines and a water treatment plant.

City officials say the project will result in cleaner water as required under Proposition 218.

But about 4,000 people have filed protests over the higher rates.

If council members approve the proposal, ratepayers would begin to see higher bills next spring.

Tonight's meeting at City Hall is scheduled to begin at 6:30.
