Police department Sergeant Andrew Pettit says officers
responded to the call at about 3:30 Tuesday
afternoon. Officers found the man just south of
24th Street and Broadway.
PETTIT: "When the officers arrived on scene, they contacted
the suspect. He still had the bat in hand, swinging the bat back
and forth. The officer told the suspect to put the bat down.
The suspect refused, came towards the officer and the officer fired
at the suspect."
Pettit says the shooting is being investigated by multiple
agencies, including the police department. He was unable to
say who the man was, why the officer did not deploy a taser, or how
far away the suspect was from the officer when the officer fired.
The officer who shot the man is on paid administrative leave
pending the outcome of the investigation.
