A settlement with Chevron paid more than 24 million dollars to the state and the counties that sued the oil company based in San Ramon.
Scully says the $6 million her office received was just part of the settlement.
SCULLY: "The stipulated judgment provides for permanent statewide injunction prohibiting violations of underground storage tank regulations and hazardous material laws, remedial measures and corporate restructuring to ensure continued compliance with our law."
650 California Chevron stations were alleged to have violated one or more state environmental laws or regulations, including tampering with leak detection devices and failing to carry out tank inspections.
Scully had to wait until the settlement was final before she
could publicly reveal what money had suddenly become available to
avoid budget cuts.
But, as part of the settlement, she still can't reveal which
infractions were committed at which stations.
71 stations between Merced and Colusa are listed in settlement
documents.
