The 6-3 vote came despite strong opposition from neighborhood activists. They argued that the depressed Oak Park neighborhood can't afford to lose an asset like the Med Center.
Sherwood Carthen pleaded to council members to reject the plan.
"Change your mind and leave the Med Center in District 5. That shouldn't be that hard to do. And right now it's almost like you're snubbing your nose at us when people come out here and say 'hey, don't do this.'"
But supporters of the redistricting plan say the Med Center should be in the same district as Elmhurst and Tahoe Park because hospital expansion plans will affect those neighborhoods.
The district lines officially change next month.
