State wildlife managers will intentionally breach a levee to let water, fish and wildlife from the San Francisco Bay back into 630-acres along the shore of Hayward.

Carl Wilcox is with the state Department of Fish and Game. He says salt-making companies reclaimed tidal marshes about 150-years ago.  

"It's an evaporative salt-making process. They would bring bay water into this closed system of ponds and slowly concentrate it through evaporation to the point that it could be harvested and become Morton Salt and Cargill Salt."

In 2003, the state acquired the land and has so far restored nearly three-thousand acres of salt ponds in the South Bay.

Money for the project came from a combination of grants and federal stimulus funds.
