Though its near midtown Sacramento, Sutter's landing is a rugged area  along the American River Parkway. Steve Evans from Friends of the River is coordinating the clean up here.  He says it's a way to give back to give to an area he loves.

EVANS: "This area hosts one of the few active nesting sites for the threatened swainson's hawk. And just a few weeks ago when I was kayaking there were sea lions which follow salmon all the way in there migration from the ocean."

Walking through forested paths with Evans downtown Sacramento feels a long way away, but urban challenges will be part of the cleanup.

EVANS: "There are also other problems here obviously,   we have a lot of illegal camping here by the homeless, which causes a trash problem, there is someone's lost grocery right down there."

Starting tomorrow at 9:00 AM,  everything from shoes to shopping carts to will be removed. Last year's clean up hauled away over 15,000 pounds of trash. This year volunteers will be in the water too. Thirty five divers will be lifting junk from the river bottom and close to a hundred kayakers will be skimming the surface for rubbish.
