The August unemployment rate was 12-point-one percent; up from
12 percent in July. According to figures from California's
Employment Development Department, the state lost 84-hundred jobs
last month. Five sectors did add jobs, including
manufacturing, professional and business services and mining and
logging. Six areas lost jobs, including construction,
educational and health services and government. The largest
decrease was in construction. Unemployment rates vary widely
by county. The state's highest rate is Imperial County at 32
percent. The lowest is Marin at 7-point-eight percent.
The U.S. unemployment rate in August was 9-point-one
percent.
