DREAM Act Referendum Now Under Way

The DREAM Act makes students who are undocumented immigrants attending California universities and community colleges eligible for state financial aid.  Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly is one of the measure's strongest opponents, and he's leading the referendum drive.

Donnelly: "The probability of us succeeding is very high.  We just printed 100,000 petitions - just came off the presses - and we are busily getting those out to distribution points around the state.  And the interest level is unlike anything I have ever seen in my life."

But under the rules governing the referendum process, Donnelly only has until January 6th to gather more than 500,000 signatures.  In other words, he'll have to average nearly 6,500 signatures a day.
