The state is giving Sacramento County about $15 million to take on low level offenders - part of California's new realignment law.

Some of that money would be used to reopen a jail known as the Roger Bauman Facility at the Rio Cosumnes Correction Center.

The county's Chief Probation Officer Don Meyer says the jail can accommodate 275 inmates.

"Now they'll be doing local time and all the parole revocations have to be done there. And it's the assessment of the Sheriff's Department that they need those beds for that purpose."

But Linneah Nelson with the ACLU told county supervisors at a recent workshop that the money would be better spent on alternatives to jail, such as home detention and counseling.

"Reopening the Roger Bauman facility is an expensive, short term band-aid that will use up Sacramento County's AB 109 funding without providing any useful short term solution."

The board is scheduled to vote on the plan Tuesday at 2:15 PM.
