Friday's pepper straying incident at UC Davis actually began at UC Berkeley on November 9th.Police arrested demonstrators there and jabbed them with batons. Police dragged Berkeley English Professor Celeste Langan down by her hair.
Those events and tuition hikes are what brought student protestors to the UC Davis quad last week. When police used pepper spray to disband the protestors, a similar scene played out.
The chief of UC Davis' police department, Annette Spicuzza, defended the officers' actions, saying they felt surrounded by protestors. She was put on administrative leave today. Two other officers involved in the pepper spraying were put on leave Sunday.
UC President Mark Yudoff says he's appalled at the UC Davis police actions and he's planning an assessment of law enforcement procedures for all the UC system's campuses. But that assessment won't come soon enough for today's protest. Which leaves the question: how will campus police respond?
