Thousands of people will be running, among them dozens hoping to qualify for next month's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Jen Hitchings of Sacramento is one of those runners. She's 48-years-old.
"I want to be one of the oldest women ever to qualify for the Olympic Trials as a first-timer."
Hitchings will have to finish the race in 2:46:00 or faster to qualify.
"This is it for me because in 2016 I'll be 52."
Of course, the vast majority of runners aren't chasing an Olympic dream…they're just doing it for their own personal fulfillment.
If you're running the event for the first time, John Schumacher with the marathon has some advice: don't start too quickly.
"You can get caught up in the race day adrenaline and run your first five miles too fast and go into oxygen debt and then you will pay for it dearly later on."
Another tip - don't do anything different on race day, like wearing new shoes.
