Crews spent the day venting natural gas into the air before replacing a foot-long elbow joint that was found to have a dent in it.
There had been no reported problems with the joint, but the company replaced it anyway as a precaution. PG&E's Brittany Chord says starting next year, crews will use a device called a "smart pig" to crawl through pipes and inspect them from the inside.
CHORD: "We're performing routine maintenance. We're also performing hydrostatic pressure tests on our system. We'll be seeing a lot more of that type of testing."
The smart pig is a camera-equipped robot that can test the smoothness and thickness of pipe.
PG&E has scheduled testing for the Yuba City area in February.
Service was not interrupted to the North Highlands area while today's repair was being completed.
